If we had gotten blown out on our home court, it would have been embarrassing. If we had gotten blown out after losing every guard who earned a free ride and with our only really good player not even in the game, it wouldn't have been good, but it would have been defensible, by some standards. But to be in this game, under these circumstances (the illness, the dumb PG play x2, no star PF at all, the huge FT disparity, etc.) for as long as we were and to keep it to single digits is not a slam on the coach.

Could he have done better? Probably, but that just makes the argument that much weaker. With a couple of better substitution decisions, we might have been within 4 or 5 of beating a ranked team even with all those things going wrong. This was a good effort by some of our players. It could've (and probably should've) been uglier, but it wasn't.

Look at this way.

SMU swept UConn last year.

Maybe Memphis is in line for a national championship.

You want to kick Pastner, I'm not going to stop you, but this isn't the reason. We played a ranked, potentially very dangerous NCAA team to a standstill for 30+ minutes with a point guard rotation of fouled out, head injury, flu, and former walkon.

You can complain, but not b/c we got swept by the best SMU team in a very long time. It's not like this was the ECU loss.
