RE: IPF
His rant lead to Larry Porter not like we immediately did anything to help the football program. In reality he was a good coach who got lazy and gave up on recruiting. But no one was financially supporting blah blah blah he was paid to do a job and he refused giving him an exit press conference was dumb.

Got lazy? He had open heart surgery.

The decision makers had already decided to hire Porter before West was fired.

They just had to make it look as if they were going through the process.

Don't confuse them with facts.

RE: IPF
Yeah he got dealt a bad hand. But it isn't your right to just be HC of a major college program.

If it isn't in you because of health, stand down.

And maybe stop coosing around too!

Just a thought!

Tommy’s rant was self-serving.

We all know if not for his now famous rant we likely would still be heading to CBHS on stormy days to have full practices.

Name it after whomever gives the most amount of $$$$$ to have it named.

Bingo. That's how most schools do it.

How much money did Spook give to build south campus, or Elma Roane give to the fieldhouse or Finch give to the Finch Center?

What are you smoking? Those are three iconic members of the university family who each made significant contributions each over decades. The name it after TW is ridiculous for many reasons but this devils advocate comment places you in the HOF of asinine uttering.

Tommy gave voice to the frustrated Tiger football fan, but he had long thrown in the towel recruiting-wise. Once he lost OC Randy Fichtner to the Steelers, his recruiting went into the crapper. He can blame it on the administration, which at the time was throwing money at Calipari to keep the breadwinner happy, but it ultimately came down to his effort & leadership. He hired JLD knowing the guy was at the end of the line & refused to recruit. It was West who ridiculed the media for calling out his questionable talent evaluation & erosion of talent. Tommy showed what was possible at Memphis, both in wins & losses.
My opinion is investment in football followed Calipari’s departure & the overall need of the athletic department to invest in the potential of football as opposed to the very limited returns with basketball. Had Calipari stayed, we would not have been able to invest in football & ultimately it was that event that inspired the football investment, not West’s self-serving rant.

That's a well-measured read of it.

Tommy West will always hold a special place for me, but once he got his contract extension he started playing more golf and hitting on more women at the Southwind bar. And now he’s paying for it by having to be a defensive line coach instead of enjoying retirement since his ex wife took him to the cleaners
