54 Seasons

Worse than 3-1 = 36

Percentage of Seasons 3-1 or Better = 33.3%

That's a Far Cry from 90%.

Over the past 54 seasons...

Total Record= 98-115-3
Average Record = 1.8-2.1-0.1

Make no mistake, recent Tiger fans have been spoiled over the past 10 seasons.

Us long-haul fans are thrilled to see 3-1 consistently.

Well , maybe not the Memphis Tiger Football team , but 90% of college football teams are 3-1 or 4-0 after 4 games!
Wow looking at that list makes me feel really old. My first game was in 1963 against Miss ST. at Crump. I have seen a lot and forgot a lot. We won that game and went 9-0-1 that year. I was hooked at eleven years old. HA

1963... first Tiger team to not lose to Ole Miss.

If I remember my trivia correctly, OM was a defending national champ.

Also, we beat Miss State and they ended up going to the Liberty Bowl in Philadelphia when there were only 7 bowl games.

Miss St (7-2-2) beat NC State (8-3) 16-12.

I've always wondered if we had gotten the invite to the Liberty Bowl if that would've elevated Memphis football nationally.

We have a good team in Boise State coming in. If we find a way to lose the game, then that's on Silverfield completely. The team is off next week, so there's no planning ahead.
Do I think Silverfiled is a great coach? No. However, some of people on here are fine with complacency and being average, because being 6-6 was better than being 2-10 twelve years ago.

First off compare who we played at any current year. I bet Bethune Cookman wasn’t on the schedule on any of those 1-3 years

Second off since 2014 we’ve gone 3-1 or better every year, probably due to playing weaker schedules but now why don’t you go over the remaining 8 games for the last 10 years compared to the past and see how that looks. Just remember figures don’t lie but lies do figure and
Perception means a lot

True. And unless we get in a better conference, we won't play good schedules going forward. If we get one P5 at the Liberty Bowl every other year, we will be lucky.

During much of the '60s the SEC invited us to their annual meetings to consider us for membership. Spook did what he could but couldn't get funding for facilities to advantage our standing - and UTK was always working against us behind the scenes. As I recall Bear Bryant was one of our biggest supporters for membership - calling us "sleeping giants" at the time.

Does this booster have any say in our out of conference scheduling?

The template for a NY6 bowl game has already been set. 1 P5 school, win and run the table w maybe one in conference loss and you have a much better chance for a NY6 bowl game than half of the P5 schools.

Gone are the days of 4 sec teams playing us or other P5 schools at that count.
We gain nothing by playing more than one.

We don't fill the stands with more than 40,000 tops at our biggest games - see SMU Championship to go to Cotton Bowl.

It's who we are in the situation we are in. Own it, accept it and power through it.

Gone are the days of recruiting 2 and 3 star players who over achieve, they will be gone to other P5 programs after one or two years. Memphis is a "marked" team that most P5 coaches want to poach from based on our past success of recruiting.

NIL has to be solved somehow someway is a hope.

Go Tigers!

NIL is an excuse that RS & LV have been using to justify being uncompetitive in the AAC. We don't have to compete with the P5 inNIL funding, we simply have to be competitive with G5 schools. SMU was always an outlier with not much to show for it in terms of performance. They had significantly more NIL funds than UCF, UH or Cincy but never won an AAC championship yet RS has convinced everyone associated with our program that we are way behind in NIL funding, pointing to SMU & implying that is why he can't compete in the AAC.

Point is we can't compete with the P5 programs for funding but we are near the top among G5 schools. So let's stop the charade. Among G5 schools we are among the top programs in budget & NIL - we should expect similar level performance.

Spook did what he could but couldn't get funding for facilities to advantage our standing - and UTK was always working against us behind the scenes. As I recall Bear Bryant was one of our biggest supporters for membership - calling us "sleeping giants" at the time.

We were a recently achieved university in the 60s with an almost exclusively student body made up of locals and a high percentage of part-time students. We weren’t born of the the wealthy class and we depended on the state to build government class red brick buildings to accommodate our growth like all the other board of regents colleges and universities. We weren’t the state university. We didn’t have major donors in large quantities and loyalties leaned Orange or different shades of Red.

Teams used to come to Memphis for visibility for their fans. Sometimes they even scheduled games to play other teams not the Tigers. My first exposure seeing games at the Liberty bowl was our Quarterback Club would pay for our HS football team to bus over for a game but The Tigers we’re not the team we came to see. Still I became a fan when 99% of everyone else on our team buses each year stuck with SEC crowd.

We’ve always fought an uphill battle for progress. We’ve made mistakes in leadership and in coaches. We’ve suffered from divided loyalties. We’ve suffered because some good leaders made choices to advance academics rather than invest in football. We’ve suffered because politics favors those already on top. We’ve suffered from self-image deficits. We’ve suffered because of fickle fans.

We’ve had moments of greatness. But greatness in sports has not been sustained. An injury, a coach takes another job, a coach gets caught, a tragic plane crash, an NCAA spanking, suffering through 1-2-3 win seasons before climbing back to respectability. We’ve seen them all.

Football has become another entertainment choice at a time there are many other choices. Admittedly, It is hard to be Tiger fan, to suffer the set backs, to see other schools get chosen while we languish in economy class.

But Ive invested my fandom loyalties since my first trip to Memphis and the Liberty Bowl in 1969 and season tickets in now my 43rd year. In the words of Tommy West “It’s Painfull” to read threads like this when there are several categories of disappointed fans that expend negative energy which is their rightful choice to make.

I just turned 68. I’ll continue to buy my season tickets as long as I can walk my aging butt from my car and up the steps. I’ll continue to give to the university academics and athletics from my middle class retirement and I’ll continue to volunteer and advocate for a university and a city I chose in 1969. It ain’t easy to be the perennial underdog but it’s in my DNA. So is hope and optimism and believing in long shots and miracles. This city and the this university provides chances to climb up the ladder and it’s guaranteed the climb will come with setbacks even falls.

See you in the stands. The lows will continue to hurt but oh how much I love the highs!

3-1 is not average

Exactly

History says that 90% of the time the Memphis Tigers football team is 3-1 or 4-0 at this time of the season!

lol... I'm in my 50s and I can tell you my history of Tiger football is not 3-1 or 4-0.

1970 - 2-2
1971 - 1-3
1972 - 0-4
1973 - 3-1
1974 - 3-1

1975 - 1-3
1976 - 3-1
1977 - 3-1

1978 - 1-3
1979 - 2-2
1980 - 1-3
1981 - 1-3
1982 - 0-4
1983 - 1-3
1984 - 3-1
1985 - 1-1-2
1986 - 0-4
1987 - 1-3
1988 - 1-3
1989 - 0-4
1990 - 2-1-1
1991 - 2-2
1992 - 1-3
1993 - 2-2
1994 - 2-2
1995 - 1-3

2000 - 3-1
2001 - 2-2
2002 - 2-2
2003 - 3-1
2004 - 3-1

2005 - 2-2
2006 - 1-3
2007 - 2-2
2008 - 1-3
2009 - 1-3
2010 - 1-3
2011 - 1-3
2012 - 0-4
2013 - 1-3
2014 - 3-1
2015 - 4-0
2016 - 4-0
2017 - 3-1
2018 - 3-1
2019 - 4-0
2020 - 3-1
2021 - 3-1
2022 - 3-1
2023 - 3-1

54 Seasons
3-1 or better = 18
Worse than 3-1 = 36

Percentage of Seasons 3-1 or Better = 33.3%

That's a Far Cry from 90%.

Over the past 54 seasons...

Total Record= 98-115-3
Average Record = 1.8-2.1-0.1

Make no mistake, recent Tiger fans have been spoiled over the past 10 seasons.

Us long-haul fans are thrilled to see 3-1 consistently.

Here's a few of the teams we used to play back then...

Cupcakes
1971 West Texas A&M W 30-0
1972 Drake L 7-23
1979 Wichita State W 16-10

2007 Jacksonville State W 35-14
2008 Nicholls State W 31-10
2009 Tennessee Martin W 41-14
2011 Austin Peay W 27-6
2012 Tennessee Martin L 17-20

Play the big names early, stack the schedule. History shows those to be losses more so than wins -- unless we're rollin'.

They're already regrouping, filling up on piss and vinegar, for Tulane. Imagine the outrage if we win that game and eventually end up winning the conference. As long as Silverfield is the coach, it will be as if the end of the world is imminent, like having Lomax on the basketball roster.
