I think that Pastner is really talented.....not at coaching basketball ... but at getting people to really like him ....

He became a multi-millionaire by playing his cards to a tee.

You got to give him credit for that ... Everyone is out there hustling to make a buck, and this guy played the ultimate hustle..

Josh is genuine. The world would be better off if there were more people like him. He may not be the man for Memphis basketball but he doesn't deserve to be portrayed as a slick con man who calculates his actions to drain the resources from our reserves.

Such a cynical view of Josh speaks more about the true nature of this board than it does about the man. What drives someone to post such a pointless thought? Talk about his coaching, his recruiting or his future but his character has been firmly establish as a good man.

Have to agree with you. Nothing that I know about Josh indicates that he is anything other than a genuinely nice guy, when you're talking about all the usual stuff that applies to.

I also think he genuinely thought he would be able to coach the Clippers when he applied, and I think he genuinely believes he is as knowledgeable and as capable as any of his peers (similar age group, experience, etc.) when it comes to the job he's doing here. But just speaking for myself, I think he was and is genuinely wrong about those last two.

If he applied to be head fundraiser at ALSAC, I'd write a letter of recommendation if asked (not that I think I would be.) But if I were on a committee reviewing his employment and deciding his fate, he'd be needing letters of recommendation from somebody for his next position.

In my opinion, he's a great recruiter, even though I keep thinking it can't last. He's been able to field teams that should have been competitive almost every year. That fact just highlights the problem, unfortunately.

It's all about timing. Yates had a higher winning percentage than Finch. But because he followed Bartow the expectation for him was higher. If there was another hire after Cal and then Pastner came in and did the same job. Then he would be praised to the heavens. Took Finch 9 years before he won first conference title including years with 17 and 18 wins and a losing season.

JEALOUSY IS AN AWFUL THING!

So is coach Worship which has always been a thing here. I just don't get it.

The coach worship is just as disgusting as the blind hatred that folks like PoopDreams have.

I'm ready for the Josh Pastner experience to either shock us in March or be done with.

That being said, I think he's a pretty genuine guy. The real haters have escalated from calling him a bad coach to now accusing him of being a con man.

Call me crazy but by year 7 I'd rather the Tiger coach field a team expected to make a run instead of hoping to be shocked.

What does that have to do with accusing Pastner of "hustling" the fans?

Yates was also something like 5-15 against the top 25 -- not great, but a lot better than some. Finch won that many the year he got fired.

I'd say fortunate more than lucky. He works extremely hard and is passionate about basketball. I think RC / boosters took the lazy / panic route with his hiring but that is hardly Pastner's fault.

Now, he and his children and likely grandchildren will never have to worry about money. Good for them but to call it what it is: overpriced mediocrity.

Its hard to understand what the problem is that some posters have with Josh. It seems to be personal, but why? Is it, because their ole lady thinks he's cute? He doesn't cuss, smoke cigarettes, or drink like they do? Not a "mans man"? He's relatively young and makes more money than them? He's doesn't cheat to win at all cost? It's in there somewhere, but your guess is as good as mine.

If it's personal to anyone it's people like you. Some around here are so caught up in how great a guy Josh is that they overlook the fact he's an average basketball coach who has underachieved here. He's not running a charity; he's coaching a basketball team where results are the measure, not how nice you are. He can go be a kindergarten teacher if he wants to be liked. Doesn't pay as much, tho.

Josh wants to be a great coach...he busts his ass and gives it his all on what he does but it's unfortunate he's not that good at it...everyone can't be great at what they want to do no matter how hard they try but as someone else said he is genuine.

RE: Do you think Pastner is lucky to be so rich ?
I don't know the answer to this but I'm going to throw it out there

Josh throws a lot of bullspit out to the media

"Dear, dear friend"
"Future hall of famer"

All of his catchphrases and repeated interview points show a person who is very aware of media \and very calculating in what he wants to portray and what message he wants to send? Are you sure it's not that way with other charitable acts?

I'm of the opinion it doesn't matter your motivations when you do something good, that the act is the important thing, so I don't think it's a big deal.

He's very much like a politician in how he handles the media IMO. Just an observation

That's a part of coaching at a major program...u gotta know how to bullshite and be a saleman but that doesn't make him less genuine as a person.

As the OP,

I do believe that Josh is a very good human being.

But I also know that there are lots of very good human beings who aren't multi-millionaires.

The Bible tells the rich to give everything they have and give it to the poor ...

Pastner is no Mother Teresa.
