I don't entirely trust this. Martin does a very good job and obviously has sources, but he didn't have either of these names 36 hours ago and clearly thought Randy Finchter was the frontrunner. Besides, when a search committee is working under tight deadlines, why characterize a meeting as an "emergency" ? Aren't they all? Seems McElwain might be trying to save face or was trying to stretch the process out to see if Fresno was in play. Who knows, but I'd rather have Fuentes anyway.

Link supporting this claim? Or was McElwain digging for $$$

McElwain's salary at Alabama is $510,000.
Kirby Smart's salary at Alabama is $750,000.

Jimmy Sexton is McElwain's agent. He was jerking Memphis around again and they told him to go to hell.

Really? I thought he might be. Figures.

What really tipped the scales for me was one sports reporter's tweet that McElwain would fit right in at Memphis because he was "like Cal."

Glad we have no part of this guy.

Memphis Roar says "According to a source, the hang-up on the deal with McElwain came down to the details of the buy-out figure."

I also heard Sexton on Lapides/Wolo's show Tuesday and he made the comment that when negotiating a contract, more salary is requested when facilities/support is lacking. In fact, he shocked Lapides when Sexton said something to the effect that the contract sets the budget for the football program.

RE: The Day Tiger Football died
We may never know the why related to McElwain but the reports are compelling - lack of school admin support for the program, inadequate facilities & inadequate salaries for assistants. We all know those are needed for success, and we all know they are certainly lacking.

To the OP's title line, the real day was a long time ago when the TBOR was formed. That day sealed the fortunes of the football program and it was done with the support and encouragement of the politicians around the state and the UT BOR. Not that the TBOR is the only issue. The city of Memphis' selfish use of the university as a resource to fund and sustain city facilities was an early & continuing issue (but could have been overcome) but since the TBOR, Tiger football has been destined to struggle because of resource limitations and the mgmt structure of the TBOR. A miracle is a lot to ask of a young, first time head coach - and with the current level of support from the TBOR, the state, the city and most of all from the school admin and the ever diminishing fans, it will likely take divine intervention for success, a miracle in the face of near-insurmountable obstacles.
