Perhaps, but his motive doesn't seem to have been entirely altruistic in that case. Nobody's is IMO. No use in pretending it was. He was clearly wanting to help himself (ego) through the promotion of Barbee.
who cares what his motive was.....
Honest John does.
Say what you want in retrospect about his poor/not poor choices...But Cal DID understand Memphis. He understood what BB means or used to mean to this town, and how it pulled together the folks from all walks of life.
I flew in for many games....Hoop excitement was in the air. It was an exhilarating. lol. A uniquely invigorating experience.
I enjoyed the Cal years. We won a ton of games. I don't think Barbee would have done anything to keep them going.
Honest John is B's name for Calipari by the way.

Agreed...
Also agree. Moreover, if we had gotten rid of Pastner and hired Pearl when he was available, we would be in much better shape now.

yep
No to Barbee. Now if it was Derek Kellogg? Maybe I could have gotten on board with that statement.
Agree. At least he would have been better than Barber.

Or probation. Would have been a roll of the dice. On court, we probably would have won a lot.

Some call B a troll but he was right about Cal all along.
He did an about face in this thread.

Some on this board and their weird fascination with Pearl is so strange. His lead assistant got arrested by the FBI in September. The Auburn AD was fired. In the meantime, Pearl has refused to cooperate with the investigation.
When Auburn's new AD was introduced last week, this is what Auburn President Steven Leath said: "Bruce and his staff are doing a great job on the court,” Leath said. “Clearly Bruce knows that sooner or later he’s going to have to come in and talk to me and others on campus about what’s going on in the program, and we’re moving toward a solution on that.”
When the new AD, Allen Greene, was asked about Pearl's job secuirty, Greene said: “I’m looking forward to the basketball game on Saturday.”
When Leath was asked, he said: “At some point, (the NCAA) will be here,” Leath said. “Yes, they will be here.” https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/co...050246001/
Auburn is a time bomb. This year's record is a temporary distraction.

That was only 2 elite eights and 2 sweet sixteens ago for Scott Drew.
Yep he likely would have kept what Cal had going here...That was the huge miss of that hiring season...
Drew would have killed it here without question.

I agree with this. Drew can recruit to Waco Texas. He can coach relatively well. He would have been what we are looking for now, roughly speaking. A blend of pastner and Tubby, aka someone who can coach and get players

Thr Drew preacher aspect is a bit disconcerting and when ‘his recruiting assistants’ got busted for threatening recruits with deportation if they didn’t choose Baylor...well that’s sleazy. Apparently there was real proof of this tactic. It’s documented . I’m just too lazy to get the link.

Should have just used a search committee for the last two hires.

X Coach currently has an all-time record of 666–197 (.772). Why would we take his spawn?

Cal was operating under the illusion that he had a say in who his successor was. And Cal's help sure didn't do much for Tony at Auburn.
cal had no reason to help auburn.....they play in same conference. cal was sincere about wanting to help keep things going here
"Cal was sincere . . ." Good one, b, you had us going for a minute.
Cal and his ego wanted to spread his coaching tree. But with Derek Kellogg, Barbee, Orlando Antiqua . . . all getting fired, he has no coaching tree.
Cal's sincerity and a buck will get you a sausage biscuit at McDonalds.
He still has Josh in the tree ... or is Josh part of the Lute Olsen tree, or both.
Is there a Tubby tree?

Would think Josh was Lute, Josh was with Cal for less than a year, right? Have no idea of any Tubby tree.

Obviously a trolling thread -
the reality is that we should have hired a real coach -
don’t believe that bullsh# that no body wanted the job —— no big names wanted the job (except Bruce Pearl and Scott Drew ) , but lots of good coaches would have taken the job - they would have killed it here
